Twiggy Headband

These totally modern headbands have flair and sass. The striped one is made from the neck of a turtleneck sweater that was hand painted with rainbow colors and then felted! Coordinating satin ribbon ties add extra style. You can even embroider the headband with a simple blanket stitch or personalized motif to make it uniquely yours. The white headbands (see page 131) are just as easy to make.

Getting Started

Enlarge the pattern 200 percent and cut it out.

Step 1 Presoak the sweater fabric for greater dye absorption. Prepare and mix the dyes in a nonreactive shallow pan. Add ½ teaspoon of citric acid or vinegar to the dye mix to prevent the dye from running. Place the fabric in hot water with the right side facing up with enough water to cover the fabric. Paint stripes on the fabric with squirt bottles, eyedroppers, or a paintbrush.

Once the desired colors have been applied and the water is clear, carefully remove the sweater. Additional resources on dyeing and hand painting wool can be found in books and online.

Step 2 Felt the dyed fabric in the washing machine (page 12). Once it has felted, block the fabric flat (page 11) and allow it to dry.

Step 3 Fold the fabric in half with the right sides together. Pin the headband pattern on the fold. Trace and cut the pattern.

Step 4 Turn under 1” (2.5 cm) at one end of both pieces of ribbon. Hand or machine sew the turned under ribbon to the wrong side of the headband at each narrow end. Tie the ribbons to wear the headband!
